For the month of February, my classroom lessons are focused on the topic of kindness. I like to use this Kindness Ball as a way to make my lessons more interactive and engaging. I use this ball activity with my 4th-6th grade students. Here's how it works....

Directions:

Write description passages on ball with black sharpie. Using double sided tape, attach the kindness matters label to ball.
Have every student sit on top of their desks.
I start the process going by throwing the ball into the air and catching it. Where my right thumb lands, I read the closest statement on the ball (that way if their thumb lands on a blank spot, they know to choose the passage that is the closest) Passage Example: Someone who is wearing stripes
I would scan the room until I found someone wearing stripes. I would give that person a compliment and throw the ball to them. Then, that person would read the passage of where their right thumb lands and give another person a compliment. Once each student has their turn, they sit back down in their chair. This makes it easy for others to see who in the class still needs a compliment. This process is completed until everyone in the class has a turn. I like to reinforce with my students the importance of giving thoughtful compliments versus saying things like "he's nice" or, "she's cool." This activity has been a hit with my students!
I spend a lot of my day helping students resolve conflicts. Finding good books on this subject is very important to incorporate in my school counseling program. One of my all-time favorite books is Enemy Pie by Derek Munson. This book talks about how friends are supposed to treat each other and not repay a mean act with another mean act.

Here is an EASY, LOW PREP game you can use in the classroom setting or a small group counseling session.

Game Directions:
Have a mixing bowl of real/disgusting ingredients (plastic toys) used to make a pie. Cover the mixing bowl with a kitchen towel so students CAN'T SEE in the bowl.

Divide the class into two teams. Have one student from each team take turns picking out an ingredient from the bowl. If they pick a positive ingredient, the student picks a card and answers the question. If they answer the question correctly, they get a point for their team. If the student picks out a negative ingredient, they don't get a point for their team. The team with the most points at the end, wins the game.

Mindfulness is a useful practice that is being taught all over the world. Mindfulness is a technique to simply be fully present in the moment. It seems to be a daily occurrence that our students report feeling overwhelmed due to stress and worries. Mindfulness activities can help keep stress and anxiety under control and help create a more peaceful life.

The purpose of mindful coloring is to have students pay attention to applying color and design to help bring awareness to the present moment without allowing other thoughts, worries, or fears penetrate the mind. Mindful coloring focuses the mind on a simple, relaxing activity which helps inspire creativity while reducing stress.

Taking the time to incorporate mindfulness activities such as this, in your counseling program, can help create a calm and inviting environment for your students. These FREE coloring pages would be a great addition to a designated Calm Down Spot in your office or classroom.
I'm always on the lookout for fun, interactive items to add to my school counseling program. Target always seems to hit the mark! Since my school budget is next to zero, I appreciate finding high quality items for a reasonable price. In addition to lower prices, I love that Target changes its merchandise frequently. This has given me the opportunity to update some of my older lessons and helps me avoid falling into a rut of doing the same old things over and over again.

I frequently use hooks or props in my school counseling program. A prop is an object that is introduced in a lesson that illustrates an important point or concept. Incorporating props in your school counseling setting can increase student engagement and can be a valuable resource in helping to add enthusiasm. The pressure to keep students attention is a daily struggle and can feel overwhelming, especially this time of the school year! It's amazing how small trinkets or props can make a huge impact with classroom lessons and individual/group counseling sessions. Here are 3 easy examples of using props from the dollar spot in your school counseling program.
These colorful ice cubes come in a bag of 12 cubes for $1. The "Cool Down Cubes" have become a great interactive activity for my students. My students have related well to the concept of completing a calming strategy to "cool down" when having negative feelings. You can write calming strategies on each ice cube or CLICK HERE for this FREE download.

In elementary school, I was a very shy and quiet student. I didn't like to stand out and I only participated in class when called on by my teacher. I would say the majority of my elementary school years I felt invisible. It wasn't until the fifth grade that I felt like my teacher really "got" me. My teacher, Mr. Bellon, invested his time and energy to develop a strong relationship with ALL his students. Every member of his class felt valued and appreciated. To this day (25+ years later), my heart is filled with such gratitude when thinking about him and the impact he had on my life.

School Counselors have A LOT of students. It is difficult to know and memorize the names of every student at school. At the end of my first year on the job, I thought back and reflected on who were the students that made it EASY for me to to remember their name? They were the students assigned to my caseload, the ones who raised their hand after every question asked, the ones with behavior challenging issues, and the ones who went out of their way to engage with me on a regular basis. Due to the large number of students at school, it's easy for the quiet and shy students to fly under the radar. Since my first year on the job, I have made it my goal to seek out those students and to do my best to get them engaged in my classroom lessons and to develop a positive connection with them. Although it may be unrealistic to know every student's name, here are 3 EASY IDEAS that can help with name recognition for the beginning of the school year.

1. Class List With Individual Pictures and Names: At the beginning of each school year, I print a list of every class which includes each student's picture and name. When teaching classroom lessons, I pull out that particular class list and refer to it often as a way to help me memorize student's names. This has been a useful method to learn their names quickly and helps me avoid calling on my students like...."You, in the back with the blue shirt!"

2. The Name Game: Have the class sit in a large circle. Tell the students you want them to pair an adjective that starts with the same letter as the first letter of their first name. Example: Joyful Jodi. One person starts by saying..."I'm joyful Jodi."Then, the student to their right goes next and says "This is Joyful Jodi, and I'm Rockin' Rachel." Then it's the third person's turn and he/she has to name the two prior students and so on around the circle. The last person has to see if he/she can remember the name of every class member. With younger aged students, I like to do the same type of game but use animals that start with their first initial of their name. Example: Jaguar Jodi, Rhino Rachel etc.

3. Name Tags: The BIGGEST help for me to learn my student's names is having name tags. The first lesson of every year, I have students pick out a name tag that best resembles them. I have them color and personalize their own name tag. I have my students place their name tags on their desk during my classroom lessons. When my lesson is over, they store their name tags in their desks until my next lesson.
My school went from a year round schedule to a traditional schedule. This has had a HUGE impact on the behavior of my students. Being on a year round schedule, students were never off track too long to forget about classroom procedures. After having the whole summer off, it has been a difficult transition back! I have never had so many classes with issues of blurting out and not listening. In one 2nd grade classroom, I noticed I had two extreme examples. I had a handful of students blurting out whatever came to mind and a handful of students that didn't say a word. I wanted that to change! So, I created these My Turn to Talk Cards to help teach the skill of self-control. In addition, the cards serve as a visual reminder to me of which students need to be called on and invited to participate more in my lesson. After using these cards, I noticed a HUGE difference in the reduction of blurt outs. When having to turn over a card, my students wanted to make their comment count so they really thought about what they wanted to say before speaking.

Here's how it works-

I give each student 2 cards for my 30 minute counselor lesson. When a student answers a question or makes a comment, they turn their card over (or they hand it to me) indicating they've had a turn to talk. If a student blurts out, I have them give me one of their cards. This helps them stop and think the NEXT time they are tempted to blurt out.

Before each lesson, I always comment about how as a class, we are practicing taking turns TALKING and taking turns LISTENING. When students have all their cards turned over, their turn to talk is over and it is now their turn to be good listeners. I don't use these cards in every classroom. I use these cards mainly in the classes that need reinforcement in this area.
Transitioning to a new school can be overwhelming to students. Helping students feel comfortable in a new environment can help reduce anxiety and worry. I work at a school where a lot of new construction is being built. Newly developed neighborhoods bring a lot of brand new students! Last year, it seemed we were getting new students EVERY week.

Meeting and reaching out to new students can make a HUGE impact. It shows them you care and that you are interested in their well-being. To help students become more comfortable at my school, I created a New Student Brochure.
I do my best to meet with every new student within the first few of days of their enrollment. I like to introduce them to a couple of students in their class and have them take the new student around to complete The New Student Bingo. This gives the new student an opportunity to spend some time with their classmates and learn the layout of the school. Once all 9 squares have an X, they come back to my office for a small treat.

Parents are almost as anxious about a new school as their child. I have received a lot of positive feedback from parents emailing me and expressing their appreciation in helping their child feel accepted and welcome at their new school.
Having been a School Counselor for 10 years, I've had the opportunity of working at several different schools. I have found the secret to a positive work environment is taking the time to invest in relationships with others. We spend a lot of time at work! So, building positive relationships helps make the workplace a fun place to be. Throughout the school year, I try to do little things to show support and care to those I work with. My school recently went through a boundary change, so there will be a lot of new staff changes this upcoming year.

A few years ago, I created a questionnaire as a way to get to know people better in a short amount of time. It was soooo helpful! It gave me the chance to see things I had in common with others and it gave me topics to discuss around the water cooler or at lunch. With all the changes at my school, I'm planning on doing this again.

I found mini TAKE 5 candy bars at Target. They were 3 bags for $10.00. Each bag had 14 candy bars in it....which makes each candy bar less than 25 cents each! When I go to each classroom for my counselor lesson, I plan to ask the Teacher to TAKE 5 minutes to fill out this questionnaire and give them a candy bar for a small treat.

Some of my best friends are my coworkers. Putting the effort in developing positive relationships can make the biggest difference. School Counselors deal with heavy subjects. Having a positive relationship with others sure makes it easier to be approached when difficult things come up.

Working at a year round school has its challenges. One issue that happens frequently is kids getting on each other's nerves by the end of the school year. My list of friendship problems seems to TRIPLE the last month of school. So, in an attempt to avoid this problem last year, I came up with The Kindness Challenge Brochure. I wanted my students to be aware of this issue and make a concentrated effort to promote kindness at school. It ended up being a big hit! I did this with my 3rd-6th grade students.

The Challenge...

Each student received their own black and white copy of the Kindness Brochure to color and personalize. The challenge was for students to complete all 16 squares of Be A Friend Bingo. Once each activity was completed, students could mark that square with an X. Before returning it to me, each student was expected to summarize the brochure with their parent(s)/guardian and get a signature. I really wanted this activity to generate some good conversation about positive things that were happening at school. Once signed, students could turn in their brochure to me and receive a small prize.

What I LOVED most about this activity was watching and hearing stories of kind acts. I received several reports from teachers of positive acts of friendship taking place in their classrooms and out at recess. I passed out approximately 455 brochures. I received 327 back. When I stopped to think about it.....327(students) x 16(squares) = 5,232 ACTS OF KINDNESS. That totally blew me away!! As I was wrapping up this lesson, I had several students ask if we could do the challenge again next year! That made my whole day! So, I think I will add a sequel to The Kindness Challenge for the upcoming school year.

Oh My! This summer is flying by! About the middle of July, I start to think ahead to the upcoming school year. One thing I love about being a School Counselor is that EVERY YEAR feels like a fresh start or a new beginning. At the end of each school year, I like to write down things I thought helped make the year run smoothly, and areas that need improvement. Over the last couple of years, I have noticed an increase in problems with kids getting along. Problems seemed to happen more frequently AND last longer. So, I've decided to go back to the basics. I'm planning to focus my 2016-17 school year on KINDNESS.

One way I plan to promote kindness at my school is using these googly eye magnetic clips I found at the Dollar Tree. They are sooo cute! As I go about my day, if I observe an act of kindness I will take a couple of minutes and fill out a kindness card. After school, I will attach the kindness card with a small treat to the googly eye clip and place it on the students desk. When that particular student shows up for school the next day, it will be a sweet surprise! The googly eye clip can stay on the desk for the day and then I plan to collect the clips after school. That way I can reuse these clips all year. I want to magnify the positive and show that kindness matters.

Comfort Buddies is a calming strategy I use for my younger students experiencing anxiety. Over the years, I've found Distraction as an effective anxiety treatment option. Distraction is defined as: Something that makes it difficult to pay attention or that draws attention away from concerns. Distraction is a great way of helping students put their mind onto something POSITIVE instead of the NEGATIVE symptoms they are experiencing. I found a cute, cheap Over the Door Shoe Holder and I filled it with stuffed animals. When students come to me upset, or full of anxiety, I let them pick out a Comfort Buddy to hang out with for a few minutes in my office. It doesn't take long for them to calm down and feel better.

To go with the Comfort Buddies I found these cute Stretchy Dogs in the Target Dollar Spot. I use them as a fidget toy. I have my students keep the stretchy dog in their pocket. If they start to feel sad or anxious again, they can put it in their hand to help them feel better. I have been happy with the success of this coping strategy in helping to reduce fears and worries.

For me, this has been the biggest issue at my school this year, by far!

As my number of students started to increase by the day, I decided to make an activity where my students could take an active role in reducing their worries. School anxiety has a way of making kids feel powerless. It's sooo important for them to realize they aren't powerless and that they DO have the power within them to overcome this issue.

When I was in college, I had a professor who talked about anxiety reducing methods. He stated that our bodies give us clues when we are worried. By recognizing these clues, we can put coping strategies in place that target that symptom to reduce fear. That concept has really stuck with me! So, I created an interactive lift-the-flap activity that takes this approach.

I use the color copy version as an example. Each flap represents how anxiety can affect that particular part of the body. Open the flap and a worry busting strategy is recorded as a way to target that area of worry.

Example:

Brain Scary thoughts.........Strategy: Write in journal

Mouth: Shortness of Breath..........Strategy: Deep breathing activity

Stomach: Butterfiles in stomach.......Strategy: Eat a healthy snack

Hands: Trembling......Strategy: Trace a figure 8 on palm of hand

Feet: Frozen in spot.......Strategy: Do something active 25 times (jumping jacks, hula hoop etc.)

With the black and white version of this activity, I have my students color and write down the body clues they are experiencing to make it personal to them. We come up with worry busting strategies that they think will work to target each symptom. I have found this activity to be SO successful in helping students reduce fears and worries.

Turkey Trouble is my favorite Thanksgiving book of all time! I teach character education lessons to every class in my school. I don't always teach the same lesson for every grade except for my favorite lessons. This means there are occasions when I teach the same lesson 34 times! It seriously feels like being Bill Murray in the movie Groundhog Day by living the same day over, and over, and over again! But, I'm happy to report, I have yet to tire from this cute book! Problem Solving is the topic I'm teaching for the month of November. Turkey Trouble is the PERFECT book to discuss this subject. In the book, Turkey has a HUGE problem....he realizes his days are numbered and he doesn't want to end up as the main course for Thanksgiving dinner! As he looks around the barnyard, he decides to disguise himself as various other animals as a solution to his problem. Each time, he feels his costume makes him look just like the other animals...well, almost! In the end, with no options left, he comes up with a clever solution to his problem by disguising himself as a pizza delivery guy. This is a creative solution to his problem and helps start a new fun tradition for Farmer Jake and his family.

Problem Solving is such an important skill for students to learn. Before reading this book, I discuss a 3-Step Problem Solving Model using the acronym GPS. GPS is easy for students to remember and I always refer back to it when students come to me with a problem. GPS stands for:

Get Calm-if you are really mad or upset you aren't in a good state of mind to solve a problem.
Plan- Making a plan means you are putting thought into what the solution may be. Many times students avoid dealing with problems which makes the problem bigger in the long run. Making a plan means action will be taken towards finding a solution.
Solve or Start Again- It's great if the problem gets solved on the first try. However, it's important to realize that doesn't happen all the time. Students often times give up if their plan doesn't work on the first try. The book Turkey Trouble demonstrated that Turkey had to come up with several different plans before his problem was solved.

To go along with this lesson, I made a Disguise the Turkey Matching Game. I printed 6 games to use in each classroom. I had 4-5 students per group on the floor in small circles. The object of the game is to try and get the most matches. One of the matching pair is a turkey in a pizza delivery disguise. That is how turkey solved his problem in the book, so the student who finds that match gets two points. My students have LOVED the funny turkey disguises in this game.
Games help teach students good life skill lessons like sportsmanship, patience, teamwork, and having a positive attitude. Poor Sportsmanship is one of my biggest pet peeves!! This is a subject I cover a lot! It gives me GREAT satisfaction when after a game is played, it ends on positive terms. This month, I created The Poor Sport Halloween Gang to teach students what sportsmanship traits can TAKE AWAY or ADD to a game. I think it's important for students to recognize these sportsmanship traits and do their best to be positive even when things don't go their way. Here's a quick bio of the characters:

Vladimer the Vampire: "Sucks the fun" out of every game.

Mumford the Mummy: Gets "wrapped up" in what everyone else is doing.

Beaker the Mad Scientist: "Mixes up" rules when losing.

Wilda the Witch: "Stirs up" trouble.

Fast Finger Franky: Cheats when nobody is looking.

Boz the Bat: Goes "batty" when losing.

Gus the Good Sport Ghost: Goes with the "flow" has "good game spirit."

We give POWER to words by using phrases over and over. There are some phrases I want to send to the GRAVEYARD and not hear them again. I bought a styrofoam headstone from the Dollar Tree and used velcro to attach dead word phrases. Phrases like..."That's not fair!" or "They cheated!" take fun away from the game.

Before EVERY game played, I ALWAYS front load each class with my expectations of good sportsmanship. I'll say things like....

"I'm so excited, we're going to play a FUN game today! I have a question....If my team loses, do I put my head down on the desk and shout out, "that's not fair!!"? The kids always answer "NO!!" I say, "What should I do or say if my team loses?
Then I say...
"Well, if my team wins, do I look at the other team and say..."Ha Ha our score is 10 and yours is 0!"?
"What should I do or say instead?"

I have found by talking about other classes makes a difference too. I'll say...
"I was so amazed about the great sportsmanship I just witnessed in the last class! One team had 7 points and the other team had zero. I was so worried they would be bad sports about losing. But, I was so impressed! The team that was losing was cheering on their teammates. Not only that, but the winning team was also saying encouraging things like.. "good try."
I have found giving real life examples seems to make students want to do their best.
I LOVE books that are unique and clever. The author, Cambria Evans is quite interesting. She and her husband celebrate Halloween every day of the year. Seriously, how FUN is that?? I usually do this lesson in my 3rd-6th grade classes. I've found older students have usually read the book Stone Soup and they grasp the meaning of this book a little better than younger students.
A quick summary of the book is... Finnigin, "The Eater," finds himself in a new town on Halloween. He is hungry, penniless and has no food to his name. He uses his smarts and a special ingredient...a MAGIC BONE to entice the townscreatures into helping make a Halloween feast for everyone to enjoy! This book teaches an important lesson of being able to accomplish great things when you work together.

After reading the book, I play The Bone Soup Game with my classes. This book includes several unusual ingredients only Halloween creatures would love. Ingredients like bat wings, stewed eyeballs, toe nail clippings etc. So, I collected as many silly, disgusting items I could find to include in my Bone Soup Game. The Dollar Store during October is a great time to find many items that would be PERFECT ingredients for the soup. Here's how the game works...

The Bone Soup Game

Put bone stickers on 6 ingredients. Put a number sticker on all remaining ingredients. I only use numbers 1 through 4 to make scoring easier. (See last pic for example)

Put ingredients in cauldron with a cover on top so students can't look inside.

Divide the class into 2 teams.

Have one student from EACH team come up at at time.

Have students wear a glove so when they reach into the cauldron, they can't feel what the item is. Also....gloves are great for dramatic effect!

Each student pulls out one item from the cauldron.

Record score from number sticker on each item pulled.

If a student pulls an item with a bone sticker on it, they get to answer a question. If they answer the question correctly, they receive 5 points for their team.

After each student has a turn, the team with the most points wins the game.

My school is on a year round schedule and we've been in session for two months. Since that time, I've had a HUGE increase in referrals of students suffering from school anxiety. I've had more referrals in these past two months when compared to the entire last school year. Since this has been such an issue, I created a Worry Buster Tear Sheet Activity to help students take an active role in reducing their anxiety.

This is a color copy version with six worry reducing strategy ideas already printed. Students can choose and tear off a worry buster strategy and complete the action listed.

I keep items in my office for students to complete these activities. Some examples of things I keep on hand are jump ropes, mini bags of pretzels, small water bottles, games, and inexpensive journals.

I like to use blank or black & white versions of this activity in my individual and group counseling sessions. Students can write or draw their own worry reducing strategy ideas. It's a good physical reminder of things they can do when they feel anxious.

Hello! Thanks for stopping by! Let me introduce myself…..

My name is Jodi Mills and I’m an elementary school counselor in Utah. I have been a school counselor for nine years and I LOVE my job. I chose “The School Counselor Is IN” as my blog name because even when I’m NOT at school, I’m always on the lookout for new ideas for lessons to teach.

I decided to start this blog for two reasons. The first reason is my basement has become the BLACK HOLE! I have years worth of lessons down there that I foolishly thought having presented the same lesson in 35 classrooms, I would have NO trouble remembering them. Sadly, I can look at many of the activities and games I’ve made and some of them don’t even look familiar! It’s like being Dory from Finding Nemo! So, I’m hoping this blog with pictures and instructions will help me stay on top of things a little better!

The second reason I started this blog is to connect with other school counselors. Over the years, I have been inspired by so many educational blogs! I’ve become a better school counselor from ideas and lesson plans I’ve gotten from blogs and Teachers Pay Teachers (TpT). I have a lot of ideas to share including classroom lesson plans, activities for group and individual counseling, and a lot more! Thanks for taking the time to stop by. Check back often to see what’s new.
